Spills are inevitable. Having the right Spill Kits & containment devices and absorbents on hand to control them is critical for any business utilizing hazardous materials such as petroleum and other potentially harmful chemicals or fluids. While there are a variety of types of spill containment supplies and accessories, it is important to know which your business requires to meet local and EPA regulations such as the Spill Prevention, Control, and Countermeasure (SPCC) rule for spill containment and/or secondary containment devices.
While spill containment or Spill Kits are meant to help you contain and clean up a spill, secondary containment devices capture the fluids in a sump preventing them from spreading or harming the environment before you can get to them. These spill materials are considered a required part of the process that can prevent extremely hazardous situations. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) has guidelines on what steps must be followed when it comes to spill containment.
What sort of measures are required for spills containment?
Spill containment of hazardous materials is crucial, but it’s also important to know what it is that’s being contained. This is because various spill containment supplies and absorbents are designed for different types of materials. Always have a good understanding and use proper labeling of any hazardous material on your site and ensure you have the proper kits and containment methods in place to control them. A hazardous spill can include (but is not limited to) any of these materials.
Spill Containment Plan
Any facility that uses machinery requiring oils or other hazardous fluids is required to have a spill containment plan, with team members trained on how to react in the event of a spill. It is critical to note that this is not a suggestion but a requirement. The plan should be able to explain what the cause (fluid) and effect (size of a spill) based on the hazardous materials stored and machinery/work vehicles on the site. From that point, the plan should explain who is in potential harm’s way due to the spill - this includes the employees working on-site, the general public at large, and the environment (nearby catch basins / inlets, bodies of water, etc.).
Ensure your plan explains what is being used to help prevent a spill and if it does happen what will be used to contain and control it. What are the responsibilities in the event of the spill? How is it being disposed of once it’s contained? Do the secondary containment devices you have in place meet regulations for sump size? There are many questions to consider here - and our team is happy to help you work through them.
