For projects that require a reusable inlet protection device for a drop inlet, The BMP Store's Grate Pyramid can be of use. The Grate Pyramid is a reusable inlet protection device that protects waterways from sediment during construction.
The unit has a heavy-duty frame that forms a solid barricade over the drop inlet. The Grate Pyramid consists of a high-flow geotextile filter, which allows filtered water to pass into the drain and leave sediment behind.
The geotextile filter skirt is reusable and replaceable, depending on the projects' needs. The Grate Pyramid also features built-in overflow, which prevents ponding from occurring in high-precipitation weather events.
- Material: Polypropylene woven fabric with aluminum base
- Color: Orange and yellow
- Quantity: 1 per order (ships in 2 boxes)
At The BMP Store, we offer our Grate Pyramid in the following sizes:
- 24" x 36"
- 30" x 30"
- 36" x 36"
- 24" x 48"
- 48" x 48"
Please keep in note that your Grate Pyramid should be at least 3" larger than the inlet grate in both length and width. This measure ensures that the unit blocks all of the sediment and debris.
This extra length of the product eliminates any chance of the water flow undermining the unit's base. To fully protect an inlet or storm drain, the user should size the product appropriately.
- Easy to install
- Lightweight and portable
- High visibility during the day and night
- Quick to assemble
- Reusable after cleaned
- Saves on labor
- Sturdy construction prevents runoff
- A strong aluminum frame prevents the unit from moving once installed
Installation is relatively straightforward.
To correctly assemble the product, we recommend the following tools:
- Knife or razor blade
A user can install the Grate Pyramid in five easy steps:
1. Clean the Grate
Before installation, use a brush to wipe down the grate. It should be clear of any debris before installation.
2. Frame Assembly
The product should have arrived in two boxes. A user can find the frame in the larger of the two boxes. Put the frame together using the necessary hardware. Then, adjust the legs, so they match up with the holes on the base.
Four pins can be placed through the holes, locking the unit into place.
3. Base Installation
Center the base on the grate. Ensure that the base is 3" larger than the grate to prevent runoff from entering the drain.
4. Frame Installation
Place the frame onto the base's center, aligning the slots with the grate's openings. Use a knife or razor blade to cut two holes at the top and bottom of the center square of the fabric. This area is where the J-Hooks will be threaded.
The J-Hook ensures that the product will not move around when placed. Use a washer and wing nut to tighten the hook.
Screw the top cap onto the thread on the hook. A user should repeat this process for the second hook.
5. Filter Installation
Slide the outer filter over the frame. Connect the bottom flap to the Velcro on the pyramid base. The Velcro forms the center square around the J-Hooks. After this step, installation is complete.
Place the Grate Pyramid above a storm drain to prevent runoff and potential inlet pollution. This unit acts as a curb filter, stopping harmful chemicals and pollutants from reaching the environment while letting fresh water pass through.
The Grate Pyramid is ideal for:
- Protecting storm drains from runoff
- Non-flammable hazardous material protection
- Situations where runoffs and spills may occur
Please use caution when using this product with flammable liquids. Polypropylene is a flammable substance, so it should never contact open flames or explosive materials.
Polypropylene is highly durable; however, it is not compatible with all types of waste products. Be sure to determine which materials a project will utilize before purchasing the Grate Pyramid.
Using polypropylene with incompatible waste materials may cause the product to crack, tear, or swell. Incorrect usage could drastically reduce the lifespan of the Grate Pyramid, reducing the product's runoff prevention capabilities as well.
Before starting a project, the Grate Pyramid should be inspected thoroughly for any signs of wear or damage. Between projects, the Grate Pyramid should be thoroughly cleaned and inspected. Debris and sediment should be removed from the product between projects to ensure it maintains its intended lifespan.
If left in the sunlight continuously, the product's polypropylene shell has a lifespan of around two years. To increase the lifespan of the Grate Pyramid, we recommend storing it in a cool, dry location. Before a user places the Grate Pyramid in storage, the product should be rinsed and brushed until clean.
The BMP Store's Purpose
At the BMP Store, we provide equipment that preserves the environment and prevents contamination. Our Grate Pyramid can help avoid spills and inlet pollution if installed and maintained correctly.
All BMPs sold at The BMP Store follow EPA regulations. Since BMPs act as the last line of defense when a spill or accident occurs, our Grate Pyramid can withstand chemical and waste runoff.
The BMP Store's BMPs are safe, efficient and offer projects and sites the continuous protection they need from equipment leaks or spills. Everything listed on our website meets the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) standards and regulations, including our inlet protection products. Our BMPs will offer the protection required to prevent pollution and water contamination.
